  • What Is The Size of a Pool Table

The size of a pool table can vary considerably these days, but three are used frequently: 4 1/2 x 9 ft, 4 x 8 ft and 3 1/2 x 7 ft. Each table will require different room space for comfortable play.

    4 1/2 x 9 Foot Tables

This table requires 14 1/2 x 19 feet of floor space minimum. The playing surface measures 9' long by 4 1/2 wide. It is used in sports and tournament play. If you have the space for a 4 x 9’, get one.

If you are interested in tournament play, practice only on 4 x 9 pool tables. This will help you get familiar with the size used in professional play. At the same time, you’ll find it easier to play on smaller pool tables.

    4' x 8' Pool Tables

The size of a pool table will depend on how much space is available. If 4 1/2 x 9’ is too big, the 4' x 8' is the next best option. 4 x 8 pool tables are often used in basements and home dens. This table is cheaper, but it is more challenging.

The problem is the balls used are the same size as those on the 4 1/2 x 9. This makes running the table harder. Shooting at long distances also becomes a challenge. Nevertheless, this size is used in watering holes and pubs all over the world.

    3 1/2 x 7 Pool Tables

3 1/2 x 7 are among the smallest pool tables available. There are even pool tables measuring 3 x 6’. These tables are very cheap, but you cannot use them to play serious pool. These are for children and should be considered as toys.

    Buying Pool Tables

Be careful when buying these mini pool tables. Some of them are poorly constructed and break easily. If you are interested in professional quality tables, purchase one in a pool hall or a specialty showroom.

You will pay more for a quality pool table, but it will be worth it. Again, spacing is crucial. At the very least, five feet is required for each side to use the cue comfortably.

Aside from the size of a pool table, the cue stick length is also important. The room space mentioned above works best for cue sticks 58 inches long or so. Don’t limit yourself to the minimum space cited here; if you can allocate more room, that’s even better.
