How to Change Car Tail Lights
- A new tail light
Open the trunk. Pull the area cargo carpet up.
Unfasten the screws on the trim cover. This is the one that shields the tail light. Take off the trim cover.
Take out the electrical connector from the rear of the tail light ballast. Turn the tail light counterclockwise. Now draw the light out of the assembly.
Position the notches on the housing with the replacement light’s tabs. Put the light in. Turn it clockwise. This will secure the assembly.
Now you can reconnect the electrical plug. Place the trim cover on. Fold the carpet down.
Note: this is only a general guide. Refer to your car manual for more specific information on how to change the tail light.
Troubleshooting Car Tail Lights
No matter what the car tail light size is, problems may crop up occasionally. Here are some possible workarounds to those problems.
Check the Fuse Panel
Open the fuse panel. This is usually below the steering wheel. Look for the tail light fuse. Use the fuse pullers to pull out the fuse. Examine the metal strip in the fuse. If it is burned or broken, it is the source of the problem. Make sure to replace it with a fuse with the exact same amp.
Checking the Brake Light Switches
Press on the brake pedal and listen for any clicking sounds. If you don’t hear the click when you press down, the light relay is damaged. This will have to be replaced.
Press the brake lights and have an assistant evaluate the lights. If it doesn’t light up, replace the bulbs at the tail light.
Keep in mind that this is a basic guide only. Your car manual should have other info about troubleshooting the tail lights. Refer to it for more information. If you are unsure on how to proceed, have it checked out in a car shop. Don’t mess with the tail lights unless you know what you are doing.
The car tail light size and type have to be of the right type. Trying to force an ill fitting tail light on the vehicle will cause more trouble.
