  • How Big is The World of Warcraft World?

If you’re a fan of the Warcraft series of World of Warcraft WorldWorld of Warcraft Worldvideo games then the World of Warcraft is not alien to you. The four games in this video game series include Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, and finally World of Warcraft. The first three installments in this series are real time strategy games while the final installment falls within the MMORPG genre.

    The World of Azeroth

The world in which the game series is set is in the world of Azeroth. If you begin playing the series from the very first installment to the last you’ll be introduced to this game world gradually. You will be given glimpses of the game world as you progress forward into the next stages until the whole game world eventually opens up to your view.

You begin to understand what Azeroth is when you play Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. The name first refers to the human kingdom besieged by a horde of orcs from another world. Players will be given the general idea that the name refers to both the kingdom and the entire land as well in a few instances. Moving forward into Tides of Darkness, the name now also refers to an entire continent but can also be seen as referencing the entire world.

The second half of Warcraft II, which is entitled Beyond the Dark Portal, the name Azeroth also refers to a kingdom and a world. In the third Installment, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, and its expansion, The Frozen Throne, players are given the impression that the name refers to the entire game world according to its inhabitants.

This is carried on to the fourth and final installment, World of Warcraft. The big difference now, as well as in Warcraft III, there are three continents in which to play on. The view is further expanded in the fact that the orcish world of Draenor or otherwise known as Outlined. Not only do you have Azeroth and Draenor but players are also given the idea that there are other worlds beyond thus making it an entire gaming universe.

    Other References

Other than the World of Warcraft, the term Azeroth is also mentioned in various forms of literature. One good example is the C.J. Cherryh’s work of fiction ‘Fires of Azeroth’. Interesting enough, though this book isn’t related to the game series, the themes are comparatively similar. According to this book, the world was invaded by hordes from the world of Shiuan. And the same as the general plot in the game world, the plot revolves around warring factions. We should expect that as the World of Warcraft expands that Azeroth itself will have new and exciting places to explore.
