    This list of the 10 biggest countries is by total area. This includes the land and the island water body territories. 
     
    1. Russia
     
    Russia is the biggest country in the world with a total area of 17,098,242 sq km or 6,601,668 sq mi. 
     
    2. Canada
     
    Its total area is 9,984,670 sq km / 3,855,100 sq mi. It is the biggest nation in the Northern Hemisphere. 
     
    3. People's Republic of China
     
    The total area is 9,596,961–9,640,011 sq km or 3,705,407–3,722,029 sq mi. The smaller figure refers to Mainland China only. It does not include places like Taiwan, Macau or Hong Kong. There are also some islands and territories that China is disputing with India. 
     
    4. United States
     
    The total area is 9,629,091 sq km or 3,717,813 sq mi. This figure only includes the incorporated territories and city states. The figure used in the U.N. includes the US portion of the Great Lakes. The CIA World Factbook includes a few more territories for the US, so the figure given is larger. 
     
    5. Brazil
     
    The total area is 8,514,877 sq km or 3,287,612 sq mi. It is the largest nation in the Southern Hemisphere and in South America. 
     
    6. Australia
     
    The total area is 7,692,024 sq km or 2,969,907 sq mi. This figure includes the Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands. When making a list of the 10 biggest countries, the Ashmore and Cartier Islands are usually not included for Australia. Note: Australia is sometimes referred to as a continent. 
     
    7. India
     
    The total area of India is 3,201,446–3,287,263 sq km or 31,236,085–1,269,219 sq mi. The bigger figure includes some of the disputed lands with China and Pakistan. If the smaller figure is given, it means the disputed territories are not included. 
     
    8. Argentina
     
    The total area is 2,780,400 sq km or 1,073,500 sq mi. This figure does not include the Argentinean claim to the Falkland Islands. If included, the size wll be be bigger. 
     
    9. Kazakhstan
     
    Its total area measures 2,724,900 sq km or 1,052,100 sq mi. This is the biggest landlocked nation on the planet. 
     
    10. Sudan
     
    The entire Sudan area is 2,505,813 sq km or 967,500 sq mi. It is the largest country in the Arab world and in the African continent. 
     
    The list of the 10 biggest countries in the world may be arranged in other ways. For example it may include only the land area. In other instances, the size is based on the population. It will of course change the results.
